Living with a reactive dog can slowly change the way you move through the world.
A simple walk around the block becomes a constant scan of your surroundings. Your head is on a swivel. You see another dog and your stomach jumps. You hold your breath, your muscles tense, your hand tightens around the leash, and you brace your body for the lunge that might come next.
That’s a lot for your nervous system to do just to walk your dog.
And sometimes it goes far beyond an uncomfortable walk. You may have already been pulled to the ground, hurt your shoulder or knee trying to hold your dog back, or come frighteningly close to losing control of the leash. Maybe walks have become so difficult that you barely take them anymore.
Your world can start getting smaller in other ways, too. You stop inviting people over because managing your dog around guests takes over the entire visit. You avoid places where you might run into other dogs. If your dog struggles with being alone, even leaving the house can become something you have to plan your life around.
